Local genealogy group presents talk on research tips

Paper Tapestry exhibit this month at library
An art exhibit, titled “Exploring the Coast to Crest Trail,” runs through Wednesday Jan. 25 at the Dove Library, 1775 Dove Lane. The exhibit features 20 works by artist Sue Britt of Carmel Valley. Britt calls the pieces “Paper Tapestry,” in which she weaves stories out of paper. The library is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Volunteers sought at The Flower Fields
The Flower Fields in Carlsbad offers volunteer opportunities including giving walking tours for elementary school children. Duties include greeting classes and touring children through the art, music, composting, music and growing stations. Volunteers must like working with children and interacting with teachers and chaperones. Other general volunteer jobs include greeting visitors, helping at events and workshops, and welcoming people to The Flower Fields. Volunteers need to be able to stand for periods of time and enjoy working with people outdoors. Training will be provided in January and February, and volunteer shifts start March 1 and run through May 14. Experience is not required, and volunteer hours are flexible. Annual Tip Top Run comes back to lagoon
The annual Tip Top Run is March 18 and will benefit the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation’s Academy of Environmental Stewardship, which serves thousands of elementary school children countywide each year. The 5k/10k fun walk and run is open to runners and walkers of all ages and corporate teams. The event includes lunch from Tip Top Meats, the namesake of the run; T-shirt, medal, family fun activities, World Water Day Festival entry, St. Patrick’s Day costume contest and a beer garden sponsored by Culver Beer. Entry fees are $35 or $75 per family until Feb. 1 when prices will increase to $50 per individual and $99 per family. Hero sponsors are needed to sponsor military families for the run/walk. Human Trafficking Awareness Walk set for Saturday
Soroptimist International of Vista and North County Inland holds its 17th Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Walk and Event 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, January 28, at United Methodist Church of Vista, 490 S. Melrose Drive. The guest speaker will be Susan Johnson, founder and CEO of Alabaster Jar Project, a nonprofit that aims to restore, rehabilitate, and empower women who are survivors of sex trafficking with long-term housing and tangible resources. There will be information tables from several groups that help victims of sex trafficking, including North County Lifeline, Southern Indian Health Council, Grace House, One Safe Place and North County LGBTQ Resource Center. Johnson will speak at around 10:30 am and the walk will start at 11 a.m., with participants walking about 1-1/2 miles round-trip down Melrose Drive and back to Church.
