Naperville council candidate petitions available Tuesday; Riverwalk Fine Art Fair ranked as top 100 show in U.S.; program on how seniors can avoid scams to be held Sept. 2 – Chicago Tribune

Naperville residents interested in running in the 2023 municipal election can pick up petitions starting Tuesday, Aug. 23, from the Community Services Department in the Naperville Municipal Center, 400 S. Eagle St.

The mayor’s position and four city council seats, all of which are four-year terms, are up for election. Candidates must be registered voters and have lived within the Naperville corporate limits for at least one year.

Petitions can be filed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 21-28, excluding weekends, Thanksgiving and the Friday after Thanksgiving.

A primary will be held Feb. 28 if more than four candidates file for mayor or if there are more than 16 candidates for council. The general election is April 4.

Naperville Art League’s Riverwalk Fine Art Fair, scheduled this year for Sept. 17-18, has been named one of the 100 best in the country by Sunshine Artist magazine.

The fair draws artists from across the world and is among the most profitable in the country based on artists’ reported sales in 2021, according to the magazine, which ranked it No. 98 out of 200 in the Best Fine Art and Design Show category.

SHARE, an Edward Hospital support group for those who have experienced miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth or neonatal death, will host its 18th annual “A Walk to Remember” Saturday, Oct. 15, on the Naperville Riverwalk.

Check-in and registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Riverwalk Grand Pavilion, 500 Jackson Ave. A memorial service featuring music, poetry and a reading of baby names will be held at 9:30 a.m., followed by a 1½-mile walk at 10:15 a.m.

Proceeds will benefit SHARE’s counseling services, bereavement training, education and the Wings of Hope Angel Garden at Edward Hospital in Naperville. A portion of this year’s proceeds will go to the construction of a bereavement room at Edward for families grieving a recent loss.

Participants must register by Sept. 12 to reserve a T-shirt and ensure their child’s name is included in the reading.

An informational lecture to help seniors avoid becoming scam victims will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 2, in the auditorium of the DuPage County JTK Administration Building, 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton.

The free program for senior citizens, caregivers and family members is sponsored by several DuPage County organizations, including the DuPage County recorder’s, sheriff’s, state’s attorney’s and treasurer’s offices.

Experts will discuss how to spot common scams, including phone, internet, dating and social media schemes, and offer tips on keeping money secure and how to report suspected fraud.
