Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is one of the most beloved entries in the Grand Theft Auto series. From its wacky story and missions to its colorful aesthetic, the game doesn’t get boring. In fact, even if you opt to ignore the story entirely and just mess around in the city, there’s a lot of fun to be had.
Vice City has a variety of different weapons that you can use, from knives to golf clubs to rocket launchers. Using them against other people is fun (and sometimes necessary), but not just any weapon will cut it when more cops and helicopters show up the more your wanted level rises. For tougher showdowns, you’ll need the best of the best.
8/8 Katana
You won’t be shooting down any police helicopters with this melee weapon, but it makes up for that with its pure destructiveness in close quarter combat. With the katana, you won’t just be randomly slicing at your foes; it actually has the ability to decapitate them, ending fights rather quickly.
It also has the advantage of not being a heavy weapon, so you can still run around while holding it instead of being forced to jog the whole time. You can find one inside Tarbrush Café at North Point Mall or in a house’s garage in Starfish Island. Alternatively, you can buy it at Tooled Up in North Point Mall.
7/8 Chainsaw
Though this melee weapon is heavy, which will slow you down when you run, it makes up for it in both damage and fun. If you want to murder a group of people quickly, that’s what the chainsaw is for. Using it around people who are close to each other will make quick and bloody work of them.
You can also scare pedestrians with it by revving it nearby them. Just make sure there aren’t any cops around if you do decide to do that. You’ll find the chainsaw at Screw This in Little Havana, or in Tommy’s safehouses after finding 20 hidden packages.
6/8 Molotov Cocktail
The molotov cocktail is one of the deadliest explosives in the game. It has a relatively wide range and its firepower is strong, so anything or anyone caught in the fire most likely won’t survive. You can use this weapon to blow up people, storefronts, and even vehicles. Just make sure not to be too close when you throw it, or you’ll end up as one of its targets too.
Using the molotov cocktail can make your wanted level shoot up pretty fast. You can find it at Tacopalypse in Downtown.
5/8 S.P.A.S.12

This shotgun is powerful enough to kill people in one shot. Combine that with how quickly it can unload shots, and you’ve got one of the deadliest weapons in the game. Even blowing up cars won’t be much of a hassle with the S.P.A.S. 12. If you’re planning on taking down a group of cops — or any group of people, for that matter — make sure to bring this shotgun with you.
You can buy it from Ammu-Nation in Downtown, and you can find it behind the Vice Surf billboard across from the airport.
4/8 PSG-1
If being discreet is more your vibe, try this weapon. Rather than show your weapon in plain sight, the PSG-1 lets you be inconspicuous when you want to eliminate targets. You can hide behind cover or stand on roofs while you take aim, giving the game an element of stealth. Also, unlike the other sniper rifle, this weapon will let you shoot seven times before having to reload. It’s sneaky and powerful.
You can buy it from Ammu-Nation in Downtown, or around the Kaufman Cabs billboard in Little Havana. If you’ve collected 50 hidden packages, you can find it in the Ocean View Hotel in Ocean Beach, Hyman Condo in Downtown, and outside the Vercetti Estate on Starfish Island.
3/8 Minigun
Despite its name, the minigun is pretty huge. In fact, it’s big enough to slow you down when running around, like the chainsaw. However, if you’re in a situation where not much running is needed, this gun can decimate a group in a matter of seconds. It shoots a lot of bullets per second, and its firepower is strong, making it hard for anyone you’re against to take action before dying.
You can find this weapon in multiple places, including the top floor of the Haitian Drug Factory or Phil’s Place in Little Haiti. If you’ve collected 60 hidden packages, you can find it in the Ocean View Hotel in Ocean Beach, on the roof of Hyman Condo in Downtown, and outside the Vercetti Estate on Starfish Island.
2/8 Rocket Launcher
If you prefer big, explosive damage over spraying bullets at things, just use the Rocket Launcher. This heavy-duty weapon can take out almost any vehicle in one blast, so imagine what it can do to people. But you can also get injured or die if you shoot it too close to yourself, so be careful with that. Also, you have to manually aim before you can fire it off.
You can buy this weapon from Phil’s Place in Little Haiti, or pick it up at the pool in Hooker Inn Express near the airport. If you’ve collected 70 hidden packages, you can find it in the Ocean View Hotel in Ocean Beach, Hyman Condo in Downtown, and outside the Vercetti Estate on Starfish Island.
1/8 M60
Though it’s massive and technically a heavy weapon, the M60 won’t slow you down when you’re holding it, unlike the other heavy weapons. It can hold a lot of ammo, and its bullets are one of the strongest in the game. This gun is another weapon that doesn’t have any problem taking down cars, helicopters, or hordes.
You can test it out during the Phnom Penh ’86 mission, and keep it after the Gun Runner mission. You can also buy it from Phil’s Place in Little Haiti or find it in the west guard tower at Fort Baxter Air Base.
